in -20 degree weather today, i saw a homeless guy shivering wrapped in a parka sitting on the sidewalk. i walked past but then went back and gave him some money, not so much because i felt bad he had no food or home but i had this sudden pang: what a fucking ass i am. i have a home and friends and places to go and people to see. this guy has what? he’s got his stoop all day, staring, trying to stay warm. nothing to do, no one to see, no where to go. no purpose. the sheer and immense boredom and lack of meaning of that existence made me want to cry for him.
